Bob Heykoop’s Choice: Egan-Jones – Accidents Waiting to Happen

It is easy to become discouraged or at least frustrated with so much negative media coverage as well as the data related to the economy, the markets, and the constant drama in congress.  I was reading this commentary from Egan-Jones credit rating agency earlier this week.  They share their view of the 5 most current risks they see as “accidents waiting to happen”.  But as with all risk there is what we refer to as risk premium.  This is commonly defined as “the investment return of any asset, that is expected to yield in excess of the current risk free return.  The good news for investors that can take a longer-range view, taking on some of this risk can pay off nicely.

Evan Barnes’ Choice: First Trust – S&P 500 Stock Prices Relative To Their All Time Highs

While we’ve equity markets recover this year from their 2022 lows, the S&P, nor any of it’s 11 sectors have been able to recapture their all-time highs. The attached Market Commentary Blog from First Trust details just how far off each sector is from its all-time high as of 9/19/2023. We tend to agree with First Trust, that investors with a long-term view should take comfort in the fact that given enough time, equity markets have never failed to produce new highs.

Drew Barnes’ Choice: Kiplinger – What an HSA Can Do for You

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are often overlooked by many people but they can be a very powerful tool.  HSAs offer several tax benefits and can be a wonderful benefit over the long term.  In this piece from Kiplinger, the various benefits are outlined along with the ins and outs of how they operate.

Andrew Rhoads’ Choice: Kiplinger – If You’d Put $1,000 into Walmart Stock 20 Years Ago, Here’s What You’d Have Today

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day volatility of the stock market especially in today’s fast-paced, high-information environment. But it’s important for investors with a longer time horizon to remember that it’s more important to spend time in the market vs. trying to time the market. This Kiplinger article emphasizes this point by detailing the results of investing $1,000 in Walmart 20 years ago.

Pete Koury’s Choice: LPL Financial – Changes to Client Statements

After receiving feedback from clients and their advisors, LPL has made changes to statements starting in October 2023.

In addition to changing statements to quarterly from monthly earlier this year, details on the changes along with some insightful Q&A provides good insight for our clients as to what to expect.

Shane Wolfe’s Choice: LPL Research – Weekly Market Commentary

LPL Research offers commentary on the Prospects for a Fourth Quarter Rally. The article highlights opportunities that could bring strong returns to finish the year. Additionally, shedding light to potential headwinds as the market digest interest rates and the Fed’s outlook. With a complex economy, the article emphasizes that a diversified and actively managed portfolio is now more important than ever.
